Black salt powder, also known as Kala namak in Hindi, originates in the salt mines in the Himalayan regions. This salt is therefore also referred as Himalayan black salt. Given to its medical qualities, it is also used in Ayurveda. It is called black salt, as the salt crystals appear black. When these black salt crystals are ground into salt powder, it turns its colour into pink. The black salt powder appears as a fine, free-flowing pale pink powder that can be sprinkled over salads, including fruit salad and vegetable salad. It can also be added to curd, chutney and chaat.
